Hi there! Lynsay here. I want to chat with you about something really close to my heart – my sketchbook practice. Over the years, I've found that keeping a regular sketchbook practice is one of the most fulfilling habits I've cultivated. It's in my sketchbooks where ideas begin, new techniques are explored, colour palettes are created, and daily fun is had. Plus, they double up as a reference library for future paintings! Honestly, it’s a total win-win to have a daily sketching practice.

Why Keep a Sketchbook?

Think of your sketchbook as your personal 'Art School' – a place with no pressure where you can experiment, explore, and let your imagination run wild. Here are my top 5 reasons why having a regular sketchbook practice is so beneficial:

  1. Freedom to Experiment: Your sketchbook is your personal art lab. Try out new techniques, play with different mediums, and make mistakes – all without the fear of ruining a final piece. This freedom is crucial for artistic growth at all levels.

  2. Daily Practice: Like any other skill, art improves with practice. Keeping a sketchbook encourages you to draw regularly, helping you refine your skills over time. Even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference. Flex those art muscles!

  3. Idea Development: Ever have a great idea pop into your head only to forget it later? This used to happen to me a lot! Having a sketchbook is the perfect place to jot down and develop these ideas. I keep a mini one in my handbag and one in my bedside drawer, as well as many different-sized ones in my studio. This way, I always have one handy when inspiration strikes.

  4. Stress Relief: Drawing can be incredibly therapeutic. Spending time in your sketchbook can help you unwind, relax, and focus your mind. It’s a form of meditation that also happens to be productive, which is right up my street as I am definitely a doer!

  5. Grow in confidence: Looking back through your old sketchbooks is a fantastic way to see how far you’ve come. It’s a visual diary showing your progress and evolving style.

Tips for a Successful Sketchbook Practice

Now that we’ve covered why sketchbooks are wonderful, let’s talk about how to make the most of your sketchbook practice:

  1. Make it easy: Always have your sketchbook handy. Whether it’s a small one you can carry in your bag or a larger one you keep at your desk, having it within reach makes it easier to draw regularly.

  2. Make it happen: Try to sketch at the same time each day. It could be in the morning with your cup of tea, during your lunch break, or in the evening to wind down. I love to habit stack and use my morning cuppa as my sketchbook time. Consistency helps make it a habit.

  3. Leave Perfectionism at the Door: Sketchbooks are all about experimenting and having fun. They are a place where you can be as messy as you like and a chance to break the ‘rules’. It’s not about creating masterpieces; it’s about exploration. Embrace the messy, the imperfect, and the unfinished. It’s all part of the process.

  4. Mix Things Up: Make it exciting by experimenting with different subjects, styles, and materials. Draw from life, use reference photos, or doodle from your imagination. This variety keeps things interesting, helps you learn new skills, and keeps you wanting to come back for more!
